YOURSELF AND THE AIR offers eclectic rock music that doesn't pollute the sound waves

I have not had the pleasure as of yet to experience this band live, but I heard about Yourself And The Air (a.k.a. YATA by fans)...through a girlfriend of one of the band members when I mentioned to her that I was the editor of a blog on rock music (can't remember why that subject came up except that I may have been at some other band venue somewhere)...she told me they would be playing at Chicago's Logan Square Auditorium on July 11th, 2010 but I missed the show inadvertently...so I finally got around to checking them out via the internet and now that I have heard their electic form of waycool-but-sometimes-dreamlike-yet-always-at-ease-with-themselves-sounding music I can't wait to see and hear them play in person...it appears from what I can glean from the internet that they have gone from a band of 5 down to a band of three (Erick Crosby, Drew Rasmussen, Jeff Papendorf; brothers Nicholas and James David seem to be missing as members on the band's MySpace page listing)...they sound similar to bands such as Ghostbird, We are the Storm, Coco B'S, The Got To Get Got, The Burning Hotels, and Dark Mean to mention a few...but from the tracks I have heard on the three albums they have produced - possibly a fourth one later this year called "Who's Who In The Zoo" - ("Hola mi Cielo"-2006, "Cold Outside Brings Heavy Thoughts to Think"-2007, "Friend of All Breeds"-2008) within a three year time period, they for some reason stand out from the crowd musically in my mind...can't quite put my finger on it until I encounter them live...until then I will have to be content to experience them on-line...however, so far, at first glance, the only criticism I have is that their on-line presence (not the content) could be a little more professionally polished...the sites they have chosen to promote themselves on seem quite eclectic in nature (surprised they're not on Reverbnation.com for instance where they can make use of the variety of widgets available for schedule and artist promotion or maybe a YouTube.com channel...they do have an Official Website though yet it fails to mention the names of the band members in their bio) but since that seems to be what their music offering is, maybe that was their intent. Look forward to meeting you guys soon...have a nice day.'Nuff Sed.

PARAGON Chicago Band Melds Reggae & Metal To Offer Originality

Paragon, the word defined, means a model of excellence, a peerless example or perfection of a kind..."perfection of a kind" they are as was displayed at a North Beach club show recently...on Friday July 23, 2010 which featured three rock bands (the others were Absolutely Perfect and Side Of Beef)...they were first on and led the pack, the other two bands that followed that night did not even come close. The "perfection of a kind" I am referring to is that Paragon has created/perfected a very unique and appealing musical sound...the "kind" of sound?...a very and quite original combination of heavy metal music and reggae rock (they are self-described as an alternative rock reggae band)...heavy metal reggae...there it is, a new form of playing music to my ears. They are leading the way in this new genre of music here in Chicago...have not heard anyone like them. Paragon opened with an excellent tune original called "The Fire Inside" offering up all the while a visual treat as well...vocals and lead guitar member Nate Emetti established the band's sound (complete with dreadlocks) and when it came to the fourth tune in the set, "Last Call", the drummer Frank Suda led the band throughout the song with an outstanding driving beat, losing his shirt, quite literally, in the process...the Bass Guitarist Andy Felbab would drop over his monitor waist-high from time to time to concentrate on playing his part in this professionally tight and togther sounding band...and to the right of the stage there stood Kiel Tredrea caressing his uniquely-shaped "1980s Cheap Trick-styled" guitar offering up sounds that attempted to rival Nate's savage pawing of the strings, taking turns sharing the lead guitar duties with Nate on the various songs. The twelfth cut off of their album "Paragon", an original tune called "Pancake", is a prime example of their heavy metal reggae rock music sound. Do not miss catching this band as they are a star on the rise in the Chicago rock music scene. They will be appearing in St.Charles, Illinois tonight at Real Time Sports pub.'Nuff Sed.

LAURIE MORVAN BAND Red Hot Blues Rock

My first cousin's California blues rock band, The Laurie Morvan Band (or LMB as known by their fans on the west coast) is currently touring coast-to-coast...and I hope to catch them when they come through Illinois this week at Fitzgerald's Night Club located at 6615 Roosevelt Road, Berwyn, IL (708-788-2118) for two sets beginning at 8PM CST on July 22nd, 2010...as Fitzgerald's describes the band: "Laurie Morvan’s unique, fiery guitar style has been highlighted in feature articles in Guitar Player, Vintage Guitar and Modern Guitars magazines. “Stunning California axe slinger...exhilarating electric blues guitar style” (Modern Guitars). “Morvan singes the strings” (Guitar Player). “Fearless and fresh...Morvan plays with plenty of imagination” (Vintage Guitar). Not just a wailin’ guitar slinger, Laurie is a compelling lead vocalist and songwriter who writes from personal stories filled with pain, triumph, hope, and her characteristic humor. Laurie Morvan Band concerts feature the beautiful harmonies of Laurie and backup singer Lisa Grubbs, as well as dueling solos between Laurie and bassist Pat Morvan. Keyboardist Tom Salyers’ fluid, passionate playing sparks up every show. Driving this high-energy train is drummer Kevin Murillo who lays down a powerful and intense blues rock foundation. Laurie and her band are a tight-knit unit who love performing and recording together. Their fun-loving enthusiasm leaps right off the stage…and it’s contagious!" 'Nuff Sed.

STING Rocks SoldOut Crowd At His Ravinia Debut

Nestled in the northern town of Highland Park, Illinois, Ravinia an outdoor music theater venue around since 1904 debuted the appearance of rock icon Sting last Saturday July 17, 2010 complete with a full orchestra and his wife in tow (singing on-stage with him), Trudie Styler. The park was as fully packed as I had ever seen it along with a perfect weather night and the sounds of all of Sting's classic hits including those from his days with The Police. Sting never dissapoints and the venue only added to the festivities. Too bad you missed it! Console yourself with a video which features his former trumpet-on-tour player Chris Botti and a similar orchestra set up that Sting had at the Ravinia concert.'Nuff Sed.

JOEY MARCANTONIO Sings His Heart Out With Original Music

In experiencing his original approach to pop-acoustic rock via Joey Marcantonio's singing and guitar work, one notices that besides the energy and intensity this kid drives into his music, he puts his heart in there too...(image above: Mike on guitar, Joey on the microphone, Dan on drums) i saw him at North Beach in Downers Grove back in May and was quite impressed...there's not much more to say than that; just be sure to check out his next show when you get a chance (currently he is working on a new album entitled "At Your Door" to be released this month July 2010) ...as evidenced by the simple description of his (image above: Mike O"Meara loving those guitar sounds) band located on his MySpace page, making beautiful music is all that seems to matter and isn't that what counts?: "Joey Marcantonio is a singer/songwriter who hails from Chicago, IL. He is currently in the studio recording (image above: Ryan Loftsgaarden supplying the bass) his full band debut release "At Your Door". Joey has a live studio album entitled "Keep Me Believing" available for free download at http://www.joeymarcantonio.com%22. Sed.

HEART-SET SELF-DESTRUCT Rocks ChiTown With Alternative Metal

Caught this rockin' alternative-metal Chicago-area band a few months back...don't miss their upcoming show at the Cubby Bear on August 13th, 2010...you will NOT be dissapointed...details below...as their MySpace page narrative states (better than i could):
"Since their formation in the spring of 2005, Heart-Set Self-Destruct has quickly become a staple in Chicago's hard rock scene. Melodic lead vocals combined with elements of punk and metal influence the band's heavy driven sound. With a buzz following the band after playing a string of shows in Chicago at the Double Door, the band released the Ordinary E.P. at the end of 2005. In Febuary 2006 Heart-Set Self-Destruct made their debut on commercial radio when the song "Unlock the Razorblades" was featured on Q101's Local Mailroom after being voted on by the station's listeners. Three months later the band hit the road for the summer of 2006 with a successful midwest tour in support of the "Ordinary" E.P. before coming back home to work on their first full-length record. "Victims Like Me", the new full-length record by Heart-Set Self-Destruct was recorded at the Soundmine Recording Studio in East Stroudsburg, PA in January 2007. The album was successfully released on May 1st, 2007 with the band independently selling over 500 copies within the first month of release. A show at the House of Blues closed out the month with Heart-Set Self-Destruct playing in support of Lucky Boys Confusion. By November 2007, Heart-Set Self-Destruct had played over 50 shows, shot a music video for their song "Burn the Sky" and sold over 1,000 copies of "Victims Like Me." The success of "Victims" paved the way for the band to make an appearance on several Van's Warped Tour dates in the Summer of 2008. After several short tours of the midwest the band returned home in the Fall of 2008 to play a couple of shows before heading back into the Studio to record a follow-up to "Victims". The yet to be named record will be recorded in January 2009 at the Soundmine Recording Studio as the band teams up once again with producer Dan Malsch." 'NufSed.
